Take a Bite from The Happy Apple!

Matt Schmiedl

Welcome! Glad you made it to this new blog series. Quick question – what do a doctor, a dietician and a trained fitness expert all have in common? I’ll give you a second…

Give up? The answer is that I am none of these by trade. Therefore, please don’t take anything I present in this blog as medically official. That said, I do like to exercise and be as healthy as I can. So I’ve had a lot of my own experiences and I’ve learned a lot over the years, and I continue to learn more – especially now that I work at the Cleveland State University Recreation Center. (Worked that plug in nicely, huh?)

Now, all that said, let’s be real – I am still a fat guy at heart. I love to eat; I love to try new foods; I love to cook…because I love to eat. And I won’t even try to deny the following points:

I snack (and I enjoy it).
I eat sweets (and I enjoy it).
I have restful days where I do next to nothing (and I enjoy them. Notice a trend?).

BUT I also recognize the value and benefits of exercising and living healthy. Therefore, I also:

enjoy exercising and do so regularly (4-5x/week)
enjoy treats and snacks in moderation (usually)
understand the value of rest and relaxation vs. just being lazy.

It’s a balancing act and it’s different for everyone. There are a lot of factors to consider and juggle. But these are not (and should not) be excuses. They are merely obstacles to finding a balance that works. It will probably take some effort and research to find a balance that is right for you, but you can be healthy and still live an exciting, fun-filled life doing (and eating) what you love. I absolutely guarantee it! How do I know? Because I’ve done it – and I continue to do it every day. And if I can do it, you definitely can do it. No, really. You can…trust me.

So I invite you to take this little journey with me. It’ll be fun and we might even learn something along the way (and don’t judge me for working in some sly plugs for the CSU Recreation Center, too). Feel free to leave your comments below and send me any questions you might have and I’ll respond as quickly as I can. And look for new blog posts every week or 2 here. Until next time!
